The Joker Myth as Mediated Stereotype in International Media Discourse

This study is a critical mixed-methods investigation of the Joker’s ubiquity within international media discourse. The research comparatively examines myth’s presence Guardian and New York Times’ news reporting (1999–2020), determines intermedia agenda-setting processes. Using corpus linguistics approach, paper also analyses media’s deployment Joker as figure speech, with purpose identifying prominent values. results indicate high prevalence consonance, eliteness, proximity, negativity, superlativeness. Moreover, investigates role that user-generated plays in perpetuating or countering dominant hegemonies, by semiotically analysing internet memes use myth r/meme subreddit community. Overall, finds popular resource for mediated construction derogatory stereotype, associated sexist, racist ableist myths, often connection to political elites (Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Barack Obama), serves tool mockery, shame, dramatization events.
